THE CULT OF DIONYSOS IN ASIA MINOR IN THE ROMAN IMPERIAL AGE Making his presence, which can be traced long before the Archaic Age, deeply felt mainly in Hellas, Asia Minor and then in Rome throughout the ancient world, Dionysos, depending on the place and time, appears before us sometimes as a god of grape-wine, sometimes as a god of theatre and acting arts and sometimes as a religious power shaped according to the local needs, however, he has generally been a god of nature representing the fertility and abundance. According to the inscriptions, Dionysos was mentioned with many epithetons in Asia Minor of the Roman Imperial Age, and that he was a god of nature bringing abundance-fertility and his many other features can be observed by these epithetons. Depending on the long stated customs, the cult of Dionysos in Asia Minor survived throughout the Roman Imperial Age (especially in the II-III. Century A.D. with festivals, cult associations and structuring, artists (musicians, players, dancers) that served his cult. According to the written records, festivals such as Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris organized in the name of Dionysos were celebrated. Dance, music and play competitions were made in these festivals maintained by the rich citizens or directors and not commonly known cult rituals were performed. Besides the associations of synodos artists called by different names in different times in the large cities of the west, cult associations broad in scope such as thiasos, speira or cult member groups with large audience in various names were active both in worshipping and these festivals. In order to achieve this, undoubtedly, both artist associations and cult associations had to have a well organized governing structure. Names were given to the cult members according to the task taken. These members also had to pay a membership fee in order to be a member or to continue to be one. Actually, these fees were as important as the epimeletes in the mainta-nance of these associations. In addition, they were supported both mate-rially and spiritually by the Roman emperors or provincial governors. Although the paganic religious activities in the lands of Asia Minor under the control of Rome were left to the free will of the cities, they would not be strong without the respect shown for the cults of the emperors, emperor and the Roman goddess (Dea Roma). The worshipping of Dionysos could only develop with the close relations with the emperors and the Roman Empire. Correspondingly, supporting a paganic cult significant for the people, the Roman Empire gained the sympathy of the people and also kept them loyal to Rome. The deification of the Roman emperors began with General Marcus Antonius, who was wellcomed as “New Dionysos” on his arrival to Ephesos, and continued in the Roman Imperial Age. During this period the associations in Anazarbos, Ankyra, Ephesos, Teōs, Aphrodisias and Sardeis characterised Emperor Hadrianus, Commodus and Caracalla by this epitheton. Thus, they deified them by considering them equal with Dionysos. Dionysos also had common worship with imperial or Dea Roma cult besides the common paganic worship of Zeus and Dēmētēr. Like all other paganic religions, the cult of Dionysos broke down with the strengthening Christianity with which it had opposite doctrines and finally with the acceptance of Christianity as the official religion of the state. However, many features of the Dionysos cult continued to exist in Asia Minor both in Christian features and local cultures and traditions. Today it still continues this effect. SEG 60-1998. Religion. Dionysos: his cult in Asia Minor, Imperial period: On the basis of archaeological, numismatic, and (mainly) epigraphic attestations, B.Öztürk,Roma imparatorluk çağı Küçükasaysı’nda Dionysos kültü (Istanbul 2010), studies the cult ofΔιόνυσος in Roman Asia Minor. After general remarks about the god, he presents a geographically arranged catalogue of the relevant inscriptions with brief comments (ph. of some texts). On 196-209, Ö. provides a register with explanations of the most important terms found in the inscriptions, and on 210/211 a list of epithets.
Abstract: This article focuses on the stephanephoros with the tasks, activities and positions of officials in urban life through the inscriptions published from Asia Minor during the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods. Ionia and Caria region present more data than others. Despite the fact that there are a large number of inscriptions, the inscriptions documented as eponymous officials have not been included in the article. The cultic inscriptions-decrees from Hellenistic period provide important informations about the functions of the stephanephoroi and the content of the organisations. It's clear that when we consider their activities and obligations, those who undertake this office belong to the most prominent families of the cities. As well as being in many cities, it was expected that wealthy citizens should aspire to such prestigious civil servants. Thus, as stated in the inscriptions, the realization of philanthropy-philosophy could be the subject.
Ἰσόθεοι τιμαί (isotheoi timai) is considered the most prestigious form of honors in the ancient Greek tradition. At it's simplest, isotheoi timai refers to the use of the cult of the gods (altars, sacrifices, and agones) for mortals. Honors equivalent to the gods (ἰσόθεοι τιμαί) are one of the main drivers behind the emergence of festivals (agones) named after Hellenistic rulers and their inheritors, Roman magistrates. In this context, within the scope of this article, starting from the Early Imperial Age, agonistic festivals dedicated to Roman magistrates in the cities of Asia Minor were identified and evaluated, with reference to the concept of ἰσόθεοι τιμαί.

"Life of Dion Chrysostomos and City of Prusa ad Olympum/Dion Khrysostomos'un Hayatı ve Prusa ad Olympum Kenti"2017 •
It is well known by nearly everyone that Bursa which is in the Marmara Region, was called by the name Prusa ad Olympum in the ancient ages. When the studies about the city’s history are looked, it can be clearly seen that lots of their important parts have resemblance with each other. Despite that, the cultural and economic structure of the city, Prusa, had also helped a lot of important people to be known. Sayings of Dion who was the top of these people, give lots of important information about the region, especially Prusa and the empire. Dion who had been an ordinary manager in Prusa became an extraordinary character who was in close relationship with the emperors, followed the philosophical trends, and banished because of what he wrote and continued being manager after he returned where he was born. Because of that, he is joined with the ones who left their marks in the Ancient History. In this work, it is tried to be given Dion Khrysostomos’ short monograph who has a significant place in both Roman Empire History and Prusa ad Olympum and at the same time information about the city Prusa.

Phrygia'dan (Dorylaion/Alpu) Dionysos İçin Yeni Bir Adak Yazıtı
Phrygia'dan (Dorylaion/Alpu) Dionysos İçin Yeni Bir Adak Yazıtı/A new votive inscription to Dionysos from Phrygia.Şurada: Vir doctus anatolicus. Studies in memory of Sencer Şahin/ Sencer Şahin Anısına Yazılar , Kabalcı Yayınevi, İstanbul 2016, 73-80.Abstract: This article presents a 3rd-century CE marble votive altar which is now in the Archaeological Museum of Eskişehir. The altar was found in Alpu in the territory of Dorylaion, but its exact provenance is unknown. Set up by three persons named as Bakchos, Demetrios and Aurelius Alekkas, the stone features a dedication to Dionysos. The inscription shows some interesting points: e.g. Bakchos is mentioned as a free man (eleutheros) but has no patronymic, whereas Demetrios, clearly defined as a slave (doulos) of Postumius Festus, is mentioned as the son of Thallos. This phenomenon is discussed in detail, one solution being that Bakchos and Demetrios were both sons of Thallos. Demetrios seems to have been sold as a slave by his father. The inscription reads as follows:
Abstract: Longing for immortality is one of the most pronounced themes of the ancient religions. The theme of being immortal -like god- is found in Dionysian rituals, as a part of Dionysian religion. The worshippers of Dionysius believed that when they engaged in orgiastic rituals, the god entered into the revelers' souls. In this way, they had the possibility of being immortal and becoming a god or becoming divine. Becoming immortal like the divine was not only an ontological transformation, but also an ethical ideal. Through the religious rituals , they believed that they became divine and an immortal (in a way) for a limited period. One of the main claims of my article is, the ideal of becoming immortal/or god passed from religious rituals to philosophical arguments, by transforming itself. I want to point out that Symposium's physical atmosphere and main themes are related to Dionysian religious rites, at the context of the immortality.
Istanbul Research Institute, Hellenikos Philologikos Syllogos Inscription Corpus, Ancient Inscriptions from Istanbul It is known many educational, intellectual and cultural societies were found in Anatolia and in Thrace during the reign of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. There were nearly thirty societies just in Istanbul in 1870s. Ὁ Ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει Ἑλληνικὸς Φιλολογικὸς σύλλογος (Hellenikos Philologikos Syllogos Konstantinoupoleos), i.e. The Greek Philological Society in Constantinople was perhaps the most important and outstanding one among them. On March 3, 1861, prominent Greeks of Constantinople including doctors, lawyers, writers, philologists and the one who had held the title of Ottoman pasha, coming together, talked about the establishment of an education society. A month later after this meeting they decided to do so, and on May 4 they proclaimed its foundation by a celebration. The Society which stated as its main function to make scientifical and educational researches, played an important role in the lives of Greek people of Istanbul in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. Therefore the work area of the Society included not only the Greek culture and literature, but also so many fields such as trade, medicine, physics, biology, archaeology...etc. Syllogos published a periodical of 23 volumes named Ἑλληνικὸς Φιλολογικὸς σύλλογος between the years 1863 and 1914. The subjects such as literature, education, economy, philosophy, geography, history, archaeology...etc. took place in this periodical. In some volumes of the periodical, there are research results about many ancient buildings and monuments some of which were lost or destroyed today. They not only registered archaeological monuments and historical artifacts but also copied and took inventories of the inscriptions which they were able to see on these buildings and monuments. One of them which is perhaps the only copy of an important manuscript, is registered today to the Semavi Eyice Library of Byzantine Researches Department of İstanbul Research Institute. This list comprises of 1270 inscriptions from different parts of the ancient world which were dated to between 4th century BC and 10th century AD. In this paper some important published Greek & Latin inscriptions of ancient Istanbul from this manuscript are being presented.
